It's mid July - what can I plant on my balcony?

Welcome to succession planting: when you can plant, and plant again!

Usually this means short-season, fast-growing crops, that can be planted one after another for multiple harvests in one season.

More reasons for mid-season planting:

🌱...you haven't yet started planting this summer

🌱...you harvested a whole crop (like garlic) from one container and now that container is available again

🌱...a diseased plant had to be removed from your space and now you want to fill that pot (note: switch plant families for best resistance)

🌱...you got a new planter to add to your space

🌱...a crop you grew in early spring has now gone to seed, you collected the seeds and now have a space in which to replant

🌱...you want to nourish the soil in an unused container so it's healthier next year (try beans for this)

Hot weather seeding tips:

🌱...keep the surface of the soil moist until seeds germinate. It helps to cover the surface with a transparent lid or a piece of burlap fabric just until the shoots pop up

🌱...avoid cool-weather crops such as lettuce and peas

🌱...check the DTM or "Days to Maturity" and if in doubt about whether a plant has time to grow, choose a fast-growing crop with a short time to maturity

🌱...sprinkle some fresh compost or manure into containers to give your soil a boost before starting new seeds

Succession planting crop list for your balcony

I've created a short list for you so it's easy to see the "last planting date" for container garden veggies.
