Title: Indigenous Gardener

Miinikaan Innovation and Design is a First Nations co-owned small consulting business. We design traditional healing gardens. Miinikaan (‘the SEED’ in Ojibwe) cultivates relationships between people and plants, by teaching and learning about the foods, trees, medicines, pollinators and their habitats. Our gardens improve the local ecology and Indigenous place making is central to our work.
Miinikaan’s work primarily consists of: Indigenous garden design, garden installation, rooftop gardens, supply of native plants and seeds, design and installation of garden planters. We also host and coordinate a seed library of Indigenous and food plants.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Garden maintenance tasks including mulching, watering, weeding, monitoring the health of garden
· Biweekly mowing of very small area of lawn
· Cleaning and maintenance of tools and equipment
· Communicate and collaborate as needed with community members and the general public
· Plant divisions and potting up, seed collecting, seed saving, processing seeds
· Additional duties may involve planting, harvesting, and recordkeeping
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
· Previous experience with gardening, landscaping, farming or horticulture
· Strong ability to work independently
· Familiarity with, or interest in, Indigenous plant medicines and native plant species
· Traditional Indigenous cultural knowledge an asset
· Willingness to work collaboratively with garden volunteers when required
· Good communication skills and interpersonal skills
Start date: May 1, 2024
Hourly Rate: $25.00 / hour
Hours: 8 hours/week. Schedule is flexible within weekday daytime hours.
There is potential for increased hours at other sites in GTA.
Location: downtown Toronto
Potential candidates must be First Nations, Inuit or Metis.
